GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, describes work focused on visibility as a source in generative search. The goal is to make accurate business information available for relevant answers. A single technical file does not address the entire task.

Why does it matter for a business?

Tools such as Google AI Mode offer answers comparing options and links to supporting sources. Appearing as a source creates another opportunity for a customer to encounter your business. Assess its relevance using your audience's actual questions and existing inquiry channels instead of assuming the same value for every company.

1. Check technical accessibility first

Useful content is insufficient when a public page requires a login or blocks the relevant search crawlers. Review page status, indexing directives, internal links and access to the main text. Existing SEO requirements apply to Google's AI features. A separate GEO file or special AI markup is not required.

2. Answer real customer questions

Collect questions repeated in sales conversations: what is included, who is the service for, how does the process work and what changes the price? Give concrete answers based on your experience. Add useful explanations and real examples instead of repeating the same points across many similar pages.

3. Align your business information

Keep your company name, phone number, service area and descriptions consistent across the website and profiles you manage. Distinguish completed work from illustrative concepts. Use verifiable information when presenting sources or experience. Structured data should describe the content visitors actually see.

4. Define measurement in advance

Choose a small set of business-relevant queries. Record the date, answer, cited page and referral visits for a consistent language and platform. Do not present one answer as a market-wide measurement. A changed question or platform might produce a different result. Track inquiries alongside visibility instead of treating mentions as the final outcome.

5. Keep content and results current

Correct outdated service terms, answer new customer questions and repair missing pages. Plan GEO alongside continuing SEO and content work. Citations and specific positions are not guaranteed. A useful plan identifies the current situation, priorities and the method used to evaluate progress.
