Start with what customers need to do and how often they will do it. Checking a restaurant menu once a month is different from ordering every day. That distinction is more useful than starting with a preferred technology.
A website for discovery and first inquiries
If customers find you through search or social media and want information about a service, a mobile-friendly website is a practical starting point. They open a link without installing software. Contact forms, ordering, bookings and customer accounts are also possible in a web project. The feature's name alone does not determine whether you need an app.
Assess an app for recurring tasks
If customers return frequently, use an account and repeat the same actions, investigate the value of an app. Users need a clear reason to install it. Device integration, unreliable connections and notification flows should be planned against specific requirements. A platform supporting a capability does not mean it comes ready-made in your product.
Include PWAs in the comparison
A progressive web app uses web technologies and offers capabilities such as installation and offline use where supported. Support differs across browsers and devices. Test essential features on the devices your customers use and provide an alternative journey when a capability is unavailable.
Budget beyond initial development
Assign responsibility for content, hosting, analytics, operating system changes and customer support. If you run both a website and an app, plan a shared source of business information. Manually changing the same price in two places creates opportunities for inconsistency.
Answer four questions before choosing
A working prototype of the main journey, reviewed with prospective users, will help you choose. Evaluate the first release using completed tasks and repeat usage as well as installation numbers.
- Will customers use the service daily, weekly or occasionally?
- What specific benefit gives them a reason to install it?
- Which device feature is essential to the business?
- Who will maintain and improve the first release?
